Feeding purely with fresh meat (Barf diet) certainly provides your four-legged friend with high-quality protein, but minerals and vitamins have to be supplied additionally via plant food. Even in the wild, the dog would instinctively supplement its diet in the same way as its wild ancestors did with grasses, herbs, roots, fallen fruit and berries, partly directly as supplementary food and partly by ingesting it in the stomach contents of its prey. You can still observe this today if your dog eats grass. As a pet owner, you are responsible for providing your four-legged friend with a balanced diet that optimally promotes the dog’s health. However, when cooking your dog's food yourself, you need some knowledge of the composition of food in order to be able to cover the needs of your four-legged friend.
